Using A Karaoke Microphone

How well you sound with karaoke sing song will depend not only on the quality of the equipment but how you use it. Using your mic correctly is also important so that you don't sound distorted or muffled. Follow these tips to using a karaoke microphone

1. If you are using a mic stand make sure the height is adjusted correctly before you start to sing. It's important to get things lined up correctly so that you are not messing around while you are singing because there is nothing that will distract your audience faster.
2. Check the on/off switch before you start to sing. Make sure it is on and make sure you are aware of the placement. These switches are often easy to move and easy to catch when you're holding the mic and singing. Suddenly you've shut your mic off by accident. Know where the switch is so you can position your hand correctly.
3. Make sure the lead is properly attached to the microphone and the player. Loose or poorly connected leads can cause static or poor connections with your mic cutting in and out. You might also consider purchasing a wireless mic. They are very convenient!
4. To make sure you don't get that horrible popping sound when you are singing words that have S, P, or B make sure the mic is not directly in front of your mouth. Position it just slightly off to the side.
5. When you are holding onto the mic be sure not to cover the pickup with your fingers or hand. Holding the mic by the handle will ensure this doesn't happen.
6. Hold the mic about 1 inch from your mouth. If you hold it too close you will sound distorted, muffled, and fuzzy.
7. If your voice is quiet turn the mic up so that it compensates for it.
8. Choose from the two types of mics for performing live. The directional lets you sing into the pickup and Omni directional picks up sound within a radius so it's good for group singing.
9. Remember that your mic is sensitive so don't be shouting into it as you'll be all distorted. If you have a loud voice naturally then hold the mic further away from your mouth.
10. When you are singing those powerful notes that you hold forever move the mic away from your mouth during the loud notes and then slowly move it back as you start to run out of breath.
11. Don't point the mic towards the speakers because it can create a nasty feedback sound that will have the audience running for the hills.
12. Treat your mic with gentle hands. Don't be pulling or tugging on the cables, and don't drop the mic. Remember this is sensitive electronic equipment that can become damaged easily.

Microphones for Karaoke come in different price ranges, sizes, and styles including wireless. Do some research so you understand the differences in mics and then purchase one that fits your budget.

Follow these simple tips and the karaoke microphone you choose will have you sounding like a star!
